The 4 singles players to win both junior and senior titles – ft. Andy Murray

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the girls’ singles event at the US Open, with the boys’ singles having been held for the first time the previous summer.

Plenty of recognizable names have lifted a junior singles title at the tournament, though only a select few have managed to then win the senior title.

Here, we look at the four players who have managed to complete the junior-senior US Open double.

Stefan Edberg
Junior: 1983
Senior: 1991, 1992

Former world No 1 and six-time Grand Slam singles champion Edberg was the first player to lift both the junior and senior title in New York.

In 1983, the Swede became the first and only player to complete the Calendar Grand Slam at junior level, defeating Simon Youl in straight sets to lift the US Open boys’ singles titles.

Eight years later, following two titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, he thrashed Jim Courier in straight sets to capture his first senior title in New York.

He successfully defended his title 12 months later, beating Pete Sampras to win his final singles major – and becoming the only junior champion to win the senior event twice.

Lindsay Davenport
Junior: 1992
Senior: 1998

Former world No 1 and three-time major singles champion Davenport remains the only female player to win both events.

Her triumph in that event came back in 1992 when the 16-year-old American breezed past compatriot Julie Steven to win the title on home soil.

Just six years later she won the first of her three Grand Slam singles titles at Flushing Meadows, beating reigning champion and long-term rival Martina Hingis in the final.

Davenport reached a second US Open final in 2000, losing to Venus Williams.

Andy Roddick
Junior: 2000
Senior: 2003

Roddick holds the record for the shortest turnaround between junior and singles success, with only three years in between his two victories.

Just three years later, a 21-year-old Roddick lifted the sole singles Grand Slam title of his career, defeating Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets to win his home major.

Alongside that victory, he was beaten by Roger Federer in the 2006 final.

Andy Murray
Junior: 2004
Senior: 2012

The fourth and most recent player to complete this unique double is the recently retired Murray, who captured the junior title 20 years ago.

Third seed Murray defeated Mischa Zverev in the semi-final, before a victory over seventh seed Sergiy Stakhovsky in the final.

Four years later, the Brit reached his first Grand Slam final in New York, though was beaten in straight sets by Federer.

However, he would capture the title – and the first of his three majors – at the US Open in 2012, defeating Novak Djokovic in a five-set epic.
