Austin Robert Butler was born on August 17, 1991 to Lori Anne Howell and David Butler in Anaheim, California. His mother was an aesthetician, while his father is a real estate appraiser. When Butler’s parents divorced when he was only seven, he and his older sister Ashley would spend an equal amount of time with them. Growing up in Anaheim, his mother would splurge on season passes to Disneyland for them, though they didn’t grow up with much money. She would even take them out of school occasionally for a day at Disneyland. At 13, Butler was approached by a representative from a background-acting management company after showing up at an audition with his step brother and started working not long after that. He attended public school until his sophomore year in high school, he then began homeschooling and took the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) to attain his diploma.
His first acting role came as Zippy Brewster on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide in 2005. He was only meant to be an extra, but quickly became a regular through the second and third seasons. Butler had two separate appearances on the mega-popular Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, playing Toby in an episode in season one and Derek Hanson in season two. He would also appear in an episode titled “iLike Jake” in the first season of iCarly as Jake Krandle. The same year, Butler starred alongside Jake Lefferman in the short film The Faithful as Danny.
