Elon Musk takes aim at MacKenzie Scott again for giving billions to liberal causes, calling the gifts ‘concerning’

Elon Musk has recently criticized MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropic efforts, expressing concern over her substantial donations to liberal nonprofits. On December 23, 2024, Musk shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) by author John LeFevre, which highlighted Scott’s contributions to organizations focused on racial equity, social justice, immigration protections, and LGBTQ+ rights. Musk captioned the repost with the word “Concerning.”
MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated over $19 billion to more than 2,450 nonprofits since 2019 through her organization, Yield Giving. Despite these substantial contributions, her net worth remains above $30 billion, largely due to the appreciation of her Amazon shares.
This isn’t the first time Musk has voiced criticism of Scott’s charitable activities. In March 2024, he posted on X, “‘Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse’ should be listed among ‘Reasons that Western Civilization died,'” though he later deleted the post.
Musk’s critiques extend beyond Scott. In June 2024, he criticized Melinda French Gates for endorsing President Joe Biden, suggesting that such endorsements could contribute to the “downfall of Western civilization.”
Despite Musk’s criticisms, Scott’s philanthropic approach has been praised by experts. Hans Peter Schmitz, a professor of nonprofit leadership at North Carolina State University, noted that Scott’s strategic giving sets a powerful example for other philanthropists. She invests directly in nonprofits and allows recipients to decide how to utilize the funds, rather than tying up her fortune in a grant system or foundation.
