Novak Djokovic confirms another tournament after Brisbane meltdown with Andy Murray
Novak Djokovic will be part of the Serbia team when they face Denmark in the Davis Cup at the end of this month, it has been confirmed.
The 37-year-old is currently preparing for the Australian Open, having endured a nightmare in Brisbane where he was beaten by Reilly Opelka in the first round.
After playing in Melbourne, he will return to international duty when Serbia get their Davis Cup campaign underway against Denmark.
It remains to be seen if Andy Murray will be in his corner, with his future alongside Djokovic beyond the end of the Australian Open yet to be confirmed.
Serbia captain Viktor Troicki revealed on Monday that he was picking his strongest team in spite of the short turnaround from the first Grand Slam of the year.
“In agreement with our tennis players, we are registering the strongest team, which will be led by Novak Djokovic,” said Troicki.
“The first Grand Slam of the season in Australia is also ahead for everyone and we are waiting to see the results they will achieve in that tournament. Accordingly, some changes are possible before the tie itself.
“The plan is to go with the strongest team and always have the highest possible expectations against any opponent. It’s the same now against Denmark. We will all be coming together from Australia to Europe to Copenhagen.”
Djokovic will certainly be hoping to lead Serbia to victory over a Denmark team which will be headlined by Holger Rune. For now, though, he will be focused on giving a good account of himself at next week’s Australian Open.
