Camila Giorgi returns to work overseas after fleeing Italy over ‘alleged tax evasion’
Camila Giorgi has landed a surprise new role in tennis almost a year after her sudden retirement.
The former world No. 26 was accused of “fleeing Italy” following reports that authorities were looking to question her over gaps in her tax returns. She denied all the claims during a TV appearance last year.
Giorgi has now found work overseas, as she was spotted interviewing players at this week’s ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires.
Giorgi quietly ended her playing career last May. She did not announce her retirement but fans noticed she had been named on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players.The body oversees anti-doping testing protocols which are necessary to play professional tennis. The Italian later confirmed the news of her retirement on Instagram.
The story took a turn when Corriere della Sera reported that the WTA had not been able to contact Giorgi or her family to confirm the news of her retirement.
The Italian media later claimed that Giorgi fled to the USA with authorities in her homeland looking to question her regarding gaps in her tax returns.
Giorgi’s lawyers Federico Marini and Cristian Carmelo Nicotra addressed the reports and claimed she did not leave Italy to avoid questioning. They also denied suggestions that Giorgi’s retirement was linked to her unpaid tax.
