Jordan Spieth’s performance in Phoenix says it all after four-word statement proven wrong
Jordan Spieth surprised himself with a solid performance at the Phoenix Open despite initially saying: “My expectations are low”.
Spieth didn’t take home the trophy but managed a T4 finish, impressing fans over the weekend. His comeback is all the more impressive, given he’s been out for over five months due to wrist surgery.
After the first round in Phoenix, Spieth predicted a less-than-stellar weekend, saying: “This is a really good test these few weeks, and my expectations are low,” adding, “I expect myself to make good swings, but as far as results, it’s hard to think that I should be expecting a lot after six months off essentially.
“Having said that, I know where I was today, and I know that I can do better than I did today. If I can try to post a few scores at or better than today, then you never know, I start getting back in the mix, and it becomes pretty fun and hopefully more consistent.”
Despite his modest expectations, Spieth’s top-five finish suggests he’s ahead of where he thought he’d be at this point. Thomas Destry clinched his first PGA championship at the event, and while he earned well-deserved praise, Spieth also received plenty of accolades, reports the Mirror US.
