Newly crowned Olympic golf champion Scottie Scheffler will cherish his gold medal from Paris 2024, despite not receiving the usual hefty prize money he’s accustomed to. In a stunning final round on Sunday, the world’s top-ranked golfer scored nine birdies and finished 19-under-par, securing gold for Team USA.
The 28-year-old started the day four shots behind but managed a bogey-free round of 62, edging out Team GB’s silver medallist Tommy Fleetwood by just one stroke. This adds to Scheffler’s impressive tally in 2024, having triumphed in seven of the 17 events he’s participated in so far.
Besides the gold medal, the Olympic champion is awarded 50 world ranking points and guaranteed entry into the next four majors – though as reigning Masters champion, Scheffler had already secured his spot. However, the absence of a substantial cash prize at the Paris Olympics means Scheffler couldn’t boost his record-breaking earnings. The International Golf Federation, which governs the event, made the decision not to award monetary prizes to Olympic medallists.
The rules vary across all Olympic sports, with World Athletics set to award £39k ($50k) to Noah Lyles following his victory in the 100m final on Sunday. Nonetheless, this doesn’t stop athletes from receiving rewards from their respective Olympic committees.
