Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview left her ‘hysterical’ after furious Palace backlash
Meghan Markle was reportedly left “hysterical” following the Palace’s “fury” after she addressed her relationship with Prince Harry publicly before they announced their engagement, a royal author has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex started dating in 2016 and by 2017 the media were all over the couple, even though they hadn’t confirmed their relationship or engagement
In September 2017, Meghan was offered the chance to grace the cover of Vanity Fair but was asked by Harry to “keep quiet” about their relationship.
In his book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors, Tom Bower claimed that the duchess was overjoyed when asked to be featured in the magazine but tried to steer the interview with Sam Kashner, a contributing editor at the magazine, away from her relationship with Harry.
He wrote: “Kashner arrived at Meghan’s home and was told that his interviewee had been given strict instructions from both Harry and Keleigh Thomas Morgan [publicist at PR firm Sunshine Sachs].”
But it didn’t work out entirely to plan, as Meghan did appear on the cover – but with the headline, ‘She’s Just Wild About Harry’.
During the interview, Meghan was questioned about her relationship with Harry and was quoted saying: “We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
The couple were not happy with the outcome and neither was the Palace, with aides allegedly being left “surprised”, according to the author.
Mr Bower wrote: “Meghan’s unprecedented brazenness took Buckingham Palace by surprise – and electrified the British media.
“Like a thunderclap, the interview triggered sensational reactions: Meghan had used her relationship with Harry to promote herself.
“The Hollywoodisation of the royal family had sealed Meghan’s fate as Harry’s fiancée.”
