Rory McIlroy makes two suggestions to PGA Tour over combating slow play which could ‘p*** off’ rivals
Rory McIlroy has provided two suggestions on how the PGA Tour can overcome slow play, but he feels it might not go down well with some of his fellow players.
The pace of play on the sport’s leading tour has once again become a hot talking point on the back of last week’s Farmers Insurance Open. The leading trio of Harris English, Andrew Novak and Aldrich Potgieter played nine holes in almost three hours on Saturday, with on-course commentator Dottie Pepper telling CBS: “It’s just got to get better.”
McIlroy – who is playing his first PGA Tour event of the season at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am – was asked how he thinks PGA Tour bosses can overcome the problem in his pre-tournament press conference.
“Smaller fields, smaller fields would help pace of play, but that takes away playing opportunities from people and that’s going to p*** some people off.” He also believes a change to tee time schedules could help, but is unsure on how big of an impact these changes could have in the long run.
“I think as well, the other thing is when we play in this time of the year, the tee times have to be a little bit tighter together so that they can get everyone through with daylight and everything,” he added. “If you could be able to space the tee times out a little bit more, that would hopefully make things flow a little bit better.
